The present paper summarizes current knowledge about a subject which may be new to many plant physiologists and specialists of related fields. The importance of glycolate metabolism can be summarized as follows:
1. Glycolate is found among the first products of photosynthesis.
2. The activation of the glycolate pathway occurs only after the establishment of the photosynthetic cycle.
3. It has been shown that glycolate is a substrate in the synthesis of amino acids and sugars in the cytoplasm.
4. The formation and oxidation of glycolate are essential steps in the process that controls stomatal movement.
5. It is believed that glyoxylate, the immediate oxidation product of glycolate, oxidizes the photoreduced NADPH₂ or PPNR, and thus, photophosphorylation is stimulated.
