Farm typologies, derived from a group of biophysical and socioeconomic factors, were studied in 38 coffee farms in the districts of San Ramón and Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Multivariate techniques were used to confirm differences for farms of different sizes, identify coffee shade canopy typologies and to evaluate the importance of the classification variables. The variables that distinguish farmer types were: number of land uses in the farm extension of cultivated coffee richness and density of shade species and presence of citrus and another fruits in the shade canopy. Three coffee shade canopy types were identified:1) highland trees with guavas or guavas with Musa spp. 2) timber species, guavas and Musa spp. and 3)mixed shade. The price of coffee is the main factor that affects the farmers' decisions respect the design of the shade canopy in coffee plantations.es_ES
