Two different systems of reforestation were compared, the taungya system in which the planting of agricultural crops is combined with the planting of valuable timber trees, and the current system of reforestation, which does not involve the temporary use of the land for agriculture. In both systems, survival, initial growth of the forest species and costs of establishment were compared. Fom valuable timber species were used laure!, Cordia alliodor: (R&P) Cham; Mexican cypress, Cupressus lusitanica Mill: Pacific Coast mahogany, Swietenia humilis Zuce, and teak, Tectona grandis Linn.
The results indicate that teak and laurel are particularly suitable for reforestation by means of the taungya system. It was also found that the system was economic and socially desirable under local conditions.
