Pesos al destete y aumentos de peso en ganado de carne
Abstract
Data were analized on growth of Brahman and Santa Gertrudis beifers, from weaning to an age of 18 months. Accumulated data from 1956 to 1961, involved 28 Brahman and 40 Santa Gertrudis The avevage birth weight was 316 kgs for Santa Gertrudis and 25.9 kgs for Brahman Weigth at weaning was greater in Santa Ger-trudis, with 194 kgs against 171 kgs for Brahman. But the weight at 18 months showed no significant differences, as Santa Gertrudis bad 286 kgs when Brabman bad 283 kgs A study of the intermediate periods showed a pronounced loss of wieght in the Santa Gertrudis yemling cows after weaning. This weight loss was larger as the weight of weaning increased with a negative correlation coefficient of 0828. It i concluded that for production of young animals fattened on pastures neither breed is very efficient as judged by weight at 18 months Further breeding investigations are needed in selection of characteristics of fast weight increases, or studies on bybrid vigor as an element capable of eliminating this inefficiency.
