In 1959, at the Pichilingue Experiment Station, Ecuador, a field test was established to compare 30 coffee varieties introduced form the germplasm collection of the Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Costa Rica. They were planted in andomized blocks with 5 replications, 16 plants per plot, at 1.5 x 1.5 m of distance. The BF pruning system was used for four years. Production was registered from 1961 to 1966. For the analysis, the local varieties ´Arabigo Typica´ and ´Robusta´were eliminated, as the plants were lagging behind one year because a very high number died during the first year and were replanted in the following one.
It was found that the varieties ´Caturra Rojo´, ´Mundo Novo´, ´Pacas´, ´6/1´, and ´Mibirizi´produced high yields compared with the national average production of Ecuador, but were somewhat low compared with the yields of other countries
