In certain regions of the Central Cordillera of Colombia, especially East of Manizales, Capital of the Departamento de Caldas, between altitudes of 2000 and 3250 meters above sea level, the native alder (Alnus jorullensis H.B.K.) appears to be a most promising tree for reafforestation.
The variety of alder growing in this region is botanically not yet determined but seems to have better growing characteristics than the variety ferruginea growing in the eastern Cordillera of Colombia.
In view of its very quick growth in height, straight form and slender branches, this alder can be thinned heavily.
