Sperm transferability of gamma-sterilized Mediterranean fruit fly males
Abstract
In the laboratory, the receptivity of Mediterranean flies towards a second mating was studied. Virgin females from six days old were placed to mate with young, sterile, 10-kilogram, or normal, sexually mature males between 7:00 and 16:00 hours. It was found that both sterile and normal males transferred a good amount of sperm in almost all matings. The receptivity of females towards a second mating did not correlate with the decreased amount of sperm transferred after the first mating, at least in the period of one day.
