Study of the chemical resistance in coffee [Coffea arabica L.] to the mancha mantecosa (waxy stain) caused by Colletotrichum spp., 1: Fungitoxic activity of the metabolites present in the laminar tissues and cuticular wax of coffee leaves
Abstract
It was determined the ether extracts from laminar tissues and cuticular wax of coffee leaves of the immune cultivar ‘Hibrido Tico and the susceptible ‘Cubujuqui’ are fungitoxic to Colletotrichum spp, the causal agent of Mancha Mantecosa. The phenolic substances extracted with acetone showed no fungitoxic activity. The extracts obtained from immune old leaves were move fungitoxic than those from young leaves of the susceptible cultivar. There was no difference between the ether extract of cuticular wax from both types of leaves; the presence of two metabolites with fungitoxic activitity in this extract was determined by uni-dimensional paper chromatografic technique. It is possible there are other dynamics mechanisms of post-penetration, as a complement to the resistant factors determined in the laminar tissues and cuticular wax.
