Depredación de Hypothenemus hampei por hormigas durante el secado solar del café

Abstract

Se evaluó la capacidad depredadora del complejo de hormigas frecuentes en las fincas en los secadores solares parabólicos de café (SSPC) en la subestación experimental La Catalina de Cenicafé en Pereira, Colombia. Se identificaron las hormigas presentes y se evaluó su depredación sobre la broca. Se aprovecharon 18 SSPC de 8 m2, utilizados en evaluaciones de control de escape de broca en la zona del beneficio. Los tratamientos fueron SSPC con extremos y bordes laterales cubiertos con tul; SSPC con extremos cubiertos con plástico y bordes laterales cubiertos de tul; y un testigo, SSPC con extremos y bordes laterales descubiertos. En cada SSPC se colocaron canastillas con 500 g de café brocado artificialmente, a las cuales las hormigas tenían acceso, y el testigo se rodeó de grasa para evitar su ingreso. Las especies identificadas como Solenopsis geminata, Dorymyrmex sp., Pheidole sp. y Mycocepurus smithii depredaron en los tratamientos durante los seis días de evaluación entre 14.627 y 13.048 estados biológicos vivos de broca. Esto correspondió al 92,1% y el 82,2% del total de brocas que abandonaron los granos durante el secado y que quedan en el piso. Del total de estados depredados, el 97% correspondió a adultos, lo que indica que estas especies de hormigas son importantes en el control de la broca durante el proceso de secado del café.

This study was carried out at the Cenicafé Experimental Substation “La Catalina”, located in Pereira, Colombia. The purpose was to evaluate the predatory ability of the ant complex Solenopsis geminata, Dorymyrmex sp., Pheidole sp. and Mycocepurus smithii Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), which are often found during the solar drying of coffee beans, known as parabolic sun dryers. The predation of biological stages of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), in these dryers was evaluated. A total of 18 dryers of 8 m2 were used. Treatments were (i) a parabolic sun dryer covered with muslin at both ends and sides; (ii) the same as before, but with the ends and sides covered in a plastic material and muslin, respectively; (iii) and the control, consisting of a parabolic solar dryer with uncovered ends and sides. In each dryer we placed baskets containing 500 g of coffee beans infested with H. hampei. The baskets in the control were surrounded with grease while the treatments allowed free access to the ants. Ants preyed in both treatments, capturing between 14,627 and 13,048 coffee berry borers. These figures corresponded to 92,1% and 82,2% of total coffee berry borer live stages that abandoned the coffee during the drying period and remained on the floor. Ninety seven percent of the preyed stages were adults, which allows to conclude that these ants play an important role in the control of H. hampei during this phase of coffee production.
