dc.description.abstract | The district of Rio Jiménez is located in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica. It is one of the three areas of study in the Atlantic Zone Progran. The other areas are Cocorí and the Neguev. These are all found in the northern part of the Atlantic Zone (figure 1). Rio Jiménez is the area with the Longest colonization history of the three. Banana estates began to dominate the area at the end of the last century. The panana disease initiated the withdrawal of the banana companies in the Atlantic Zone in the 30's. The United Fruit Company started growing cocoa in the atlantic zone. It didn't torn out to be lucrative. In 1953 the United Fruit Company abandoned its estates and left the cocoa in the hands of the people. At that tine, people colonizing the area started growing maize and cassava. | |
