In 1952, the Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences in cooperation with the Government of Uruguay, started a Demonstration Area in San Ramón, as part of the Technical Cooperation Program of the Organization of American States. This article presents highlights of experience obtained so far with this approach to agricultural development. Hints on how to select and operate such types of areas are given.
