Stable plant communities in the wet tropics can only be achieved when three essential functions are maintained: erosion control, maintenance of nutrient cycle and control of eluviation and leaching. A few examples of typical crops when these three functions are found, are described. In the wet tropics the most stable community is the primary forest. Any change affecting this community, especially transformation into agricultural crops must bear in mind that the best land use is not the one which offers immediate income but that which maintains the three functions described.es_ES
