Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted in order to determine the most prevalent physiologic races of bean rust (Uromyces phaseoli (Pers.) Wint. var. phaseoli) present in Costa Rica. Field reaction towards the disease was determined for 12 cultivars selected by the Basic Food Crops Program of the IICA for their productivity. Results showed the following as the existing races in Costa Rica: Race 3 and 15 in Alajuela; 3 and 25 in Turrialba; 8 and 22 in San Isidro del General; 10 and 32 in Cartago and race 8 in Los Angeles de Tilarán. Also the following biotypes were determined: biotype 1 of race 3 in Turrialba; biotype 1 of race 32 in Cartago, biotype 1 of race 10 in Guanacaste; biotype 1 of race 29 in Alajuela. In addition to the races and biotypes mentioned, a new race was also identified. Among the 13 bean varieties evaluated in the field, ‘Compuesto Negro Chimaltenango’, ‘S-219-N-1’, ‘Compuesto Cotaxtla’, ‘S-19-N’ and ‘Jamapa’ were the most resistant to rust.es_ES
