The solubility of P retained by two acid soils of tropical regions was studied. Total amount of P retained from a solution of 100 ppm of P was higher for Cervantes soil (Vitrandept) as compared to Colorado soil (Distropept). Fractionation studies indicated the predominance of Al-P in both soils, but there was predominance of Ca-P over Fe-P in the case of Cervantes. Desorption carried out with different extractants indicated that Cervantes released more P in Bray and Mehlich extracts as compared to Colorado soil. In the case of an andosol such as Cervantes the dissolution of amorphous materials by acid extractants brings together a higher dissolution of P. Fractionation of P after successive desorption indicated differential dissolution of different P fractions retained initially by the soiles_ES
