The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of foxtails in 2.5-year-old Pinus caribaea Morelet plantations in Turrialba, Costa Rica. It was found that the caribaea variety does not exhibit this type of growth, the bahamensis variety exhibits some, and the hondurensis variety exhibits the highest number. Likewise, there is a high correlation between the average height and the percentage of foxtails, and between the average height and the length of the foxtails, indicating that the site influences the occurrence of this type of growth. The appearance of foxtails is due to a strong hereditary phenomenon that is greatly modified by site conditions and climatic factors.es_ES
