Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine the bark volume and the stem volume affected by buttresses in a tropical secondary broadleaf forest approximately 60 years of age, located in Turrialba, Costa Rica in the "Very humid premontane tropical forest" life zone according to the Holdridge classification system. The study is based on measurements of 1012 trees with a dbh of more than 20 cm, distributed over 123 plots, 10 x 50 m in size. It was estimated that 2.8 per cent of the total or 5.2 per cent of the commercial volume of the forest is affected by buttresses. Under prevailing loggong practices in tropical forests this volume is not being harvested. Bark volume in this forest amounted to 11.83 per cent of the commercial volume. With increasing tree diameters the bark volume decreases in relation to the commercial volume
