Five different peat deposits and bagazo washed to remove residual sugar were examined for their ability to maintain viable population of Rhizobium trifolii. For of the peats gave good Rhizobium survival but the remaining peat and the bagazo appeared somewhat inferior, especially when stored at 37°C. One of the peats (from La Selva Loma, Antioquia) was then retested using strains of R. trifolii, R. meliloti Rhizobium spp. Survival of the rhizobia in the peat was again adequate after 89 days of storage, though temperature affected strains somewhat differently. Of seven adhesives studied, gum arabic and Methyl Ethyl cellulose gave highly satisfactory survival of Rhizobium trifolii, Glutocoll (Hydroxymethylcellulose, produced by Inquinal S.A.) was also shown to maintain high levels of Rhizobium in contact with the seed. This substance could be used as a cheaper and more readily available substitute for gum arabic or Methyl-ethyl cellulose in Colombiaes_ES
