The present study was initiated at the "Los Diamantes" Breeding and Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), located in Guápiles, Costa Rica, at 10o 13'N and 83o 47'W, at an altitude of 249 masl, in the humid tropics, with average temperatures and precipitation of 23.1oC and 4705 mm, respectively. The purpose of the study was to evaluate changes in availability, botanical composition, nutritive quality and selectivity in two grasses (B. brizantha and B. humidicola) of different growth habit (semi-erect or creeping) associated with three legumes of different morphology (creeping, erect or creeping), established two years earlier. The pastures were managed in grazing with two stocking rates (1.75 and 3.0 AU/ha), with 5 days of occupation and 30 days of rest. Among the grasses, B. brizantha maintained the highest proportion of forage availability in the pasture throughout the duration of the experiment. With a percentage in the pasture that ranged from 85 to 97% at low load and from 69 to 92% at high load, the lowest value being associated with A. pintoi at high load due to the greater contribution of the legume (19.5%). The availability of B. brizantha was higher when associated with S. guianensis and C. macrocarpum than with A. pintoi (5327 and 5006 vs. 4501), but the latter was the most stable association, since Centrosema and Stylosanthes did not persist in the pasture. In contrast, the availability of B. humidicola was 3912, 1535 and 735 kg DM/ha, for those associated with Stylosanthes, Arachis and Centrosema. When associated with Centrosema at low load, both the grass and the legume disappeared from the pasture, being replaced by P fasciculatum; while at high load they maintained a higher proportion, registering 38.5% for B. humidicola and (4.1%) for Centrosema. On the other hand, when B. humidicola was associated with A pintoi, the effect of load was very marked, since the proportion of grasses was much higher in the low load than in the high load (45.8 vs. 7.8% respectively) and at the end of the experiment the proportion of grasses in the high load was very low. This was associated with a dominance of Arachis, which reached 80% of the pasture composition, but dropped drastically to 18% at the end of the experiment, as a consequence of a strong displacement by P. fasciculatum. A. pintoi was the legume with the highest availability; the values were higher when associated with B. humidicola than with B. brizantha (1894 vs. 811 kg/ha). The availability of the other legumes was low, except in the case of Stylosanthes (225 kg DM/ha) associated with B. humidicola and managed with low load. There were no differences in CP and DIVMS of the grasses, but differences due to legumes and load were detected. Values of 12.2, 11.1 and 9.9% CP and Arachos, Centrosema and Stylosanthes, respectively, were recorded. The high load corresponded to a higher DIVMS of grasses (64.6% vs. 61.0% for the low load). For legumes, the average CP values for Arachis, Centrosema and Stylosanthes were 22.4, 21.6 and 20.2%, respectively. In DIVMS, Arachis with (65.5) outperformed the remaining ones which averaged 56.0%. The animals selected more leaves than stems and the quality of the selected diet was higher than the forage on offer. Among the grasses, the animals had A. pintoi, which showed good palatability but when there was a high proportion of legume in the pasture (>70%) they selected against it. Animals only consumed natural grass and an appreciable amount of stems in appreciable quantity when the availability of green leaves was considerably reduced in the pasture after four days of occupancy. In addition, at all times the consumption of inert material was very low. Based on the data, it is concluded that the B. brizantha/a. pintoi association managed with 3.0 AU/ha constitutes a productive and persistent pasture option under humid tropical conditions. The use of a 1.75 AU/ha load in this association could reduce the legume proportion. In addition, A. pintoi associated with B. humidicola tends to dominate the pasture, so it would be necessary to intensify management in order to guarantee an adequate balance between grass and legume. However, there is doubt about the productivity of this association over time. On the other hand, under the conditions in which the study was carried out, Centrosema macrocarpum and Stylosanthes guianensis do not persist under grazing.en
