La cadena productiva del bambú en Costa Rica: potencial de desarrollo de un recurso subutilizado en América Latina

Abstract

Esta investigación se basa en el análisis de la cadena productiva del bambú en Costa Rica, como respuesta a la necesidad de determinar el potencial de desarrollo de este recurso tropical en el país. Se puso un énfasis especial en los productores para conocer el rol del bambú en sus medios de vida. Los métodos empleados incluyeron entrevistas semiestructuradas, mapa de intercambio, línea de tiempo y línea de tendencias con el fin de determinar las tendencias de la oferta y demanda por bambú en Costa Rica. El desarrollo del mercado en Costa Rica debe apuntar a diferentes segmentos (p.ej. muebles rústicos vs muebles para oficina y hotelería vs muebles de alto término) para lograr mayor valor agregado, con base en una estrecha colaboración entre diferentes eslabones lo que permitiría avanzar hacia una cadena de valor del bambú en Costa Rica.

This study includes an analysis of the supply chain of bamboo in Costa Rica aiming at advancing our understanding of the current status of bamboo use, processing and commercialization in the country, and the identifying the development potential of this tropical resource. Information about past and current trends in bamboo production, manufacturing, distribution, and consumption was obtained through semi-structured interviews, support methods and secondary information. Market development in Costa Rica should target different market segments, such as rustic vis-{hooka}-vis office and hotel or high end furniture, enabling chain actors to generate increased value added through enhanced cooperation among actors representing different segments of the supply chain and between them and technical, business development and financial service providers. Eventually, this would lead to a value chain of bamboo in Costa Rica.
