The performance of four kinds of relatively inexpensive Torula yeasts (type-B, type-50, type-200 and type-300) were compared against the standard yeast (type CF-2) used in the larval diet of the Mediterranean fruit fly. All the yeasts tested, gave satisfactory results for rearing this fly. The use of any one of these yeasts did not adversely affect the weight of the individual pupae, per cent pupal recovery form the larval medium, adult emergence from the pupal stage, and the fertility and fecundity of the adult females. Substitution of yeast type-B for type CF-2 in the larval diet would result in a saving of US $1.05 for each million pupae produced.
