An aphid-borne, seed-transmitted mosaic virus isolated from beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Alajuela, Costa Rica, was characterized a common bean mosaic virus (CBMV). Properties in crude sap, host range and symptomatology of infected plants were similar but not identical to those of four previously reported strains of CBMV. Several selected Central American varieties of beans were found resistant to this virus. Partially purified preparations were obtained after a chloroform-butanol extraction and three cycles of differential centrifugation
