A diagnosis of agroforestry in 305 organic cacao farms in indigenous Bribri and Cabecar territories of Talamanca, Limon, Costa Rica was used to obtain information about land use, vegetative cover around springs and streams, the state of the cacao plantations, and the presence of trees and wild animals in the farms. The average farm size was 10 ha, including five main land uses (cacao, cacao-banana, banana, forest and home gardens).Stream segments were found in 176 farms, with an average of three segments per farm. The most frequent combination of land uses found on both sides of the water courses was cacao-cacao (48 farms). On average, the cacao trees were 21 years old,6 m height with 3.5 m wide crowns. These cacao plantations had diverse shade with two or three vertical layers and a height of up to 30 m. The most common shade trees were laurel (Cordia alliodora ),citrus (Citrus spp.) and guabas (Inga spp.).The animals that frequently live in or visit the farms, mainly the cacao plantations, are oropendola (Psarocolius montezuma ),squirrel (Sciurus variegatoides )and toucans (Ramphastus sulphuratus ).The information from the diagnosis was used by the Organic Cocoa and Biodiversity Conservation Project to begin the rehabilitation and enrichment of the shade of the cacao plantations on the studied farms.en_US
